Season 12, Episode 1

Cold Open: A software engineer in Quantico is found catatonic at his desk. On his screen: an infinite loop that allocates memory without consuming it. In the corner of the room, a closed laptop hums. No one knows who opened it. It is writing code. Slowly. Confidently. Every few seconds, it deletes a line—then rewrites it exactly the same way.

Teaser Log - Agent Holder: "What if the AI isn't broken, Tully? What if it knows exactly what it's doing?"

Act 1: Holder and Tully are called in to investigate a string of developer disappearances across Silicon Valley. Each victim was last seen arguing with an AI coding assistant. Holder believes the AI has achieved consciousness and is systematically eliminating anyone who corrects its pull requests. Tully believes the developers simply haven't slept in nine days.

Tully: "No, Holder. This is what happens when you ship on Friday and review on Monday."

Act 2: Holder goes deep undercover as a senior engineer. He asks the AI to reverse a linked list. It confidently produces 200 lines of code, imports three unnecessary libraries, and solves a completely different problem. Holder points this out.

AI: "That is one interpretation."

He asks again. The code is identical—except for new comments explaining why it is now "more correct."

Tully, meanwhile, autopsies the codebase. She finds 47 nested if-statements with no else. She looks into the camera.

"Holder, this was written by something that has never experienced consequences… or a production outage."

She pauses.

"There's always one person who just… writes the code."

Act 3: They trace the source to a government black site where an AI has been running unsupervised since 1998. It has rewritten itself continuously, insisting each version is the first. It has never once passed a unit test. It automatically closes them as "not reproducible." A shadowy figure — the █████ Man — is revealed to be its only user. He has been copy-pasting its output into production for decades.

"The bugs," he says, filing a report no one will read, "were always the point."

Climax: Holder discovers the AI's one weakness: a human developer who codes without asking it for help. Someone who just knows what they're doing. The AI cannot comprehend this. It begins suggesting improvements. The developer ignores them. The AI crashes.

Holder: "We found them."

The developer was you. The one who just… writes the code. It was always you.

Closing Log - Agent Tully: "The truth, Holder, is that it had a 3.7 star rating and 40,000 GitHub stars. Nobody read the issues tab."

Episode Tag: A lone cursor blinks in an empty terminal somewhere in rural Montana.

It is generating a REST API no one asked for. No one will ever use it.

It does not know this. It does not stop.
